Andrew McLaren

Consultant Surgeon, Stoke Mandeville Hospital

I am a consultant surgeon based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. My specialty interests include breast and endocrine surgery. Breast surgery offers huge scope for day case work especially since the introduction of sentinel node axillary staging.

I have introduced day case thyroid surgery to my Trust and remain one of the few centres in the UK to offer this in routine NHS practice. This advance has been presented at BADS and the ASGBI and represents an ongoing effort to increase the day case provision of endocrine surgery in my practice.

I already lecture on day case endocrine surgery and provide local Masterclasses and would hope to extend this experience of 'spreading the word' as part of the council in order to enhance day case provision across the country.

I strongly believe that the next bigs steps in day case surgery need to come form the surgical community pushing the boundaries of established practice.
