Harmeet Khaira

Good Hope Hospital, West Midlands

I have been a consultant general and vascular surgeon at Good Hope Hospital (West Midlands) for 9 years. In that time I have developed an interest in day case surgery such that it now forms approximately 80% of my work. I was the first surgeon in the hospital to carry out laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (including bilateral procedures) and thyroid surgery (presented at BADS conference) as day case procedures. At Good Hope we have been carrying out bilateral varicose veins surgery (including redo surgery) as a day case procedure since I started. Use of a 23 hour facility would allow me to do laparoscopic incisional hernia repair and carotid endarterectomy through the day unit setting.
I am planning a direct access inguinal hernia list – having previously found that a dedicated hernia clinic functioned extremely well.
I have just been asked to help streamline day case procedures at Good Hope and Heartlands Hospitals and to champion day case surgery together with an anaesthetic colleague.
