Ian Armstrong
Consultant Anaesthetist, Edinburgh

I am a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh which has a dedicated Day Surgery Unit with 23 hour stay beds. I have a significant commitment to the day surgery unit involved with vascular surgery, general surgery and orthopaedic trauma, as well as the pre-assessment clinic. My main areas of interest are in the role of local anaesthesia for analgesia in day surgery, pre-assessment clinics and audit. I am a strong supporter of nurse led pre-assessment clinics with dedicated medical support, and believe that many patients with significant co-morbidities can be safely managed in the setting of day surgery with this approach. The multidisciplinary nature of the BADS membership is I believe its great strength and an aspect of BADS I enjoy. If elected I would wish to promote the work and value of pre-assessment clinics and encourage the further sharing of information and contact between BADS members through audit schemes and research projects. I am currently a co-opted member of BADS council and wish to seek election to council.
